Dreaming King
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. It is a federal holiday, first observed in 1986, to honor the civil rights leader. King was assassinated in 1968. He was only 39 years old.
The protest song “We Shall Overcome” became an anthem for the 1960s civil rights movement. In my mind, the song has become synonymous with the passionate spirit and heroism of King.
We shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darlin’ here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall overcome someday
Well we’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand
We’ll walk hand in hand someday
Darlin’ here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We’ll walk hand in hand someday
Well we shall live in peace, we shall live in peace
We shall live in peace someday
Darlin’ here in my heart, yeah I do believe
We shall live in peace someday
Well we are not afraid, we are not afraid
We shall overcome someday
Yeah here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday
Hey we shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Darlin’ here in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday
