Chilean miners finally are being transported to surface

Posted on the October 13th, 2010

The breathtakingly precarious process of bringing the thirty-three Chilean miners to the surface is underway. The miners have been trapped 2,250 feet, approximately, underground for two months (see story here).

The New York Times has created an excellent interactive graphic feature that illustrates the engineering details of the small capsule that is carrying the miners one at a time up to freedom (“A Final Rescue Phase” Oct 12, 2010).

Wikipedia also has a full description of the mining accident and rescue effort here.

I am hoping with all my heart that all goes well in this rescue.
