Body scanners at European airports not at all a done deal

Posted on the January 21st, 2010

The new favorite airline security measure of body scanners is not such a hot sell in Europe, according to an article yesterday in the Global Post (“Europe’s airport security dilemma” by Teri Schultz, Jan 20, 2010).  Not only are the scanners often politically unpopular, but who pays for them here is quite different than in the USA.

Excerpt:

Europe is the only region in the world where airports pay for their own security measures. So the long list of additional regulations imposed since the 9/11 attacks by the European Union or individual governments — which can enact more stringent measures than the EU mandates — has cost airports a hefty sum, according to Airports Council International (ACI).
